Originally from Detroit, IFBB Pro bodybuilder Walter Martin was always strong even compared to college kids when he was in eighth grade. Struggling with academics, Walter decided minimum pay jobs were not for him. He joined the Job Corp and later ended up competing and opening up his own gym.
"I hated bodybuilders. I hated the spandex pants and bright colors..."
"You'll never be a bodybuilder if you don't spend $500,000 on drugs." someone told him as a thirteen year old.
Where he grew up, bodybuilders would kick him off the machines. "I didn't have an option."
The only reason I became a bodybuilder was to beat the two guys that were bodybuilders before me. We are friends now but that was how it happened. I trained for 20 years before I started competing. I never thought I'd compete. I had a lot of self-doubt....I became pro not even trying. First four years (2010-2014) I was completely natural. People were thinking I was on steroids! And I was like, creatine,...
Walter talks with Dennis about big tattoos and posing. And about listening to his coaches and getting fired. Keeping it real!
"I knew about steroids, I heard about it, but I really didn't know anything...I heard it would shrink your dick."
"When I got on juice I was then 187, the next year I was 207."
"I was eating pizza and donuts the night before I first competed in 2014 (Junk loading)!" I wasn't working with anybody at the time.
When I first went to the doctor I told him I was on testosterone and he tested me and said no you're not. (It was all fake!) He said, don't be stupid. You don't even know what you are putting in your body.
I turned pro and I got no notoriety. No one paid any attention...now I'm old and I don't have time to mess around.
"You crazy as hell!" - Dennis James
He is always in his NoNonsense gym off of Interstate 90 at 623 Griswold Road in Elyria, Ohio, either at the front desk or training people. As he said, when he started bodybuilding, he had no one talk to him, so he wants that to be different for people at his gym.
“I’ve been working 80 to 100 hours a week for eight years straight, even the day after eye surgery to remove a tumor behind his eye" Walter said. “Everyone knows I’m always here. Until I get it right and everything is done, I’m not going to slow down. I want to be known as the best gym in Northeast Ohio.”
